Bill would require Senior Care Background Checks

A news story came out earlier this month about a New York State employer who failed to conduct background checks on employees working with elderly clients. (

The new employee had a criminal record that no one was aware of, and no one suspected that he was a danger. In reality, he was convicted sex offender. After being hired without a background check, he was accused of "improperly touching a 91-year-old-woman".

Many of us have elderly relatives in care facilities where we assume their safety will be protected. This 91 year old victim could have been your mother, aunt, or grandmother. It's hard to fathom how a simple registry check was not completed.
